History

Foreign Literatures Department was opened at Gorky State Public Library on October 24, 1994 on the basis of the German reading hall, an initiative of Goethe Institute in Germany. According to 1995-1996 agreements of international book interchange between Gorky State Public Library in Vladivostok and public libraries in Japan (Toyama, Tottory), some books and other resources in Japanese have been added to the library’s collection.
In 1996, Consulate General of the USA in Vladivostok donated 600 books in English to the library, and in April of 2003 the American Information Center (American Corner), a collaborated project of the US Embassy in Moscow and Gorky State Public Library in Vladivostok, was officially opened at the Foreign Literatures Department.


Information Resources and Collections:

By January 1, 2004 Department’s collection has consisted of 8372 items including 7318 books, 499 videos, 477 audio tapes, 49 music CDs, 29 computer CDs in English, German, French, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. At the Department there is a variety of periodicals in foreign languages as well. All materials have been catalogued both in card index and electronically. The Department’s collection is constantly being developed due to new supply, library book exchange, donations and other sources. The Department is equipped with computers and multimedia section for its patrons’ use.
